De Tabaksplant is located in Amersfoort’s historical centre, very close to well known monuments, such as the Kamperbinnenpoort (city gateway), and historic houses like the alms houses Armen de Poth and the terraced Muurhuizen. The authentic character of a city from the Middle Ages has been well preserved. Yet within walking distance there is a great variety of shops, numerous café terraces, bars and restaurants. The theatre and congress centre, De Flint, is in the same street as De Tabaksplant, while theatre and cinema De Lieve Vrouw is a few hundred meters away. The museums in Amersfoort - Flehite, De Zonnehof, Armando Museum and the Jacobs van den Hof Museum - are all in or just outside the city centre.
Unfortunately, the Armando Museum has been caught in a fire. Lots of paintings are destroyed, however a few of them could be saved. Those paintings and others can now be seen at the Saint Aegten chapel in Amersfoort, only a few steps away from the ruin. The Elleboog church in which the museum was located, will be restored, but this will take a few years.
The modern district of Kattenbroek is well worth a visit because of its visionary planning and interesting architecture. And the set-up of Amersfoort’s Zoo on the Barchem Wuytierslaan is pretty special too. Boat trips through the city canals, etc are organised by the De Waterline Guild. Further information can be obtained from the tourist office, VVV Amersfoort.
There are a large number of nice restaurants in and around the centre of Amersfoort
