De Tabaksplant Bed and Breakfast
De Tabaksplant is located in several historic buildings in the age-old centre of Amersfoort. The main building, number 15 in the Coninckstraat, was built by the owner of a tobacco plantation in about 1620.He used it as his home. At that time tobacco was a common crop in the area between Amersfoort and Nijkerk. Yet traces of much earlier habitation have also been found here.
Old deeds mention that the attics of the dwelling always known as “De Tabaksplant” were first used for drying tobacco. In the 17th century the building was refronted with what is known as a Haarlem façade; it is now a listed building. The hall and passages of the house, which was fully restored in 1990, are still paved with splendid flagstones.
The smaller adjoining building, Coninckstraat 13, was probably built about 1670 as a private home. Its plain façade is a gem in its simplicity. Municipally listed and restored in 1999, its rear side is also very characteristic and faces onto a recently uncovered well.
